What is ZiiTrend?
How many seats would the Liberals win in Canada's general election?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #7 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  was scored on 15-Oct-2008 (50 days ago)
With a general election looming, the party that has the most question marks is probably the Liberals. Once the dominating power in Canadian politics, the Liberal party has been struggling since Paul Martin's defeat in 2006. Current leader Stephane Dion has been widely criticized for his leadership and his indecision in responding to the Conservatives. Many feel that a loss in the upcoming election would spell the end of Dion's political career.

How many seats do you think the Liberal Party will take in the October's election (there are 308 seats in the parliament in total; the Liberals currently have 95 seats)

Federal Liberals announced their "Green Shift" strategy in June, calling for a carbon tax along with lower personal income and business taxes. Will that become popular? I really doubt it .....

The problem, I see, is Dion's lack of leadership that will do the Liberals in. The Liberals had many opportunities to topple the Conservatives during that past 1.5 years, but time after time, Dion had chosen to abstain from voting while harshly criticizing Harper. Those who follow the news could easily tell that they were afraid to topple the government because they knew they could not win in a general election. Now, Harper plays buff to them and calls an election. The Liberals will be on the defence the entire campaign, I think, and will lose popularity. They would be lucky if they don't lose more than 20 seats, mostly to the Conservatives in Ontario and Quebec.

Since I think the Conservatives will win close to 160 seats, the 33 seats I predict them gaining must come from somewhere. I think about half of that would come from the Liberals, taking them down to about 80 seats. The others will be lost by the Bloc and the NDP, who I think will actually suffer a lot more worse in the popular vote this time around.

I believe they will lose at least 5-10 seats to PC.
