What is ZiiTrend?
How many seats would the Conservatives win in Canada's general election?

The Associated Press reports that Stephen Harper, prime minister and leader of the conservative party, is expected to call a general election in October this weekend. This would end the longest-serving minority government since the 1920s, a government that lasts over a year and a half.

Reports are suggesting that the Conservatives are gaining major grounds in the province of Quebec, a traditional battle ground between the Parti Quebecois and the Liberals. This greatly increases the chance of a Conservative majority, thus the election call.

The Conservatives currently hold 127 of the 308 seats in the parliament. If an October election is called, how many seats do you think they will win in the election (in order to win a majority government, a party has to win 155 or more seats)?

Well, they won but fail to become majority government, which in my opinion is a good thing.

A recent poll shows that the Conservatives are pulling away from the Bloc in the province of Quebec. This is extremely significant, because Quebec holds 75 of the seats in the parliament, second only to Ontario's 106. If this support holds up, then the conservatives can easily gain 15 - 20 seats. Together with a gain in Ontario (Conservatives have 41 versus the Liberals' 51 right now), I think they can push themselves to a very weak majority government. My early prediction has them winning around 160 seats.

Comparing to the current seats, PC will need 28 more seats to form a majority government. It may be still not possible as Liberals + NDP may lose up to 25 seats to PC.
