The unstable political landscape of Thailand has taken another turn: Abhisit Vejjajiva has just been appointed the new prime minister.
Many of you would remember that opposition party, allegedly with the support of royalties and the military, had the airports in Bangkok occupied several weeks ago. For the second time in as many years, they were unhappy that an election produces a parliament and a prime minister that has close ties with exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Abhisit represents a change, as he is the leader of the opposition party. However, his ascend to power is not democratic, to say the least. The elected PM is ousted, and Abhisit gets power. His "democratic reform" ideas include re-introducing appointed parliament members to replace elected representatives, an area where pro-Thaksin politicians have long done well. What Abhisit has going for him is the support of the military and the royalties... How long would his rule last?

It'd be a sad day in the democracy of Thailand if they re-introduce appointed parliament members...
