Google announces GPhone in Q3 2008

The same rumor is spreading again. Google might be working on the GPhone to counter the Apple iPhone 3G.
http://www.informationwee...

Some argue that it will definitely happen because of how lucrative the telecommunication market is. Some argue that it will never happen because Google's strategy is software platform (aka Android).

Do you think Google will announce a GPhone (must include hardware) in Q3 2008? Please note the phone doesn't have to have the exact name "GPhone".

The new smart phone that runs on Android, isn't that considered a GPhone?

As pointed out in the intro, Google's strategy is the software Android platform.
As a basic rule, if you provide a service or software platform that you WANT others to adopt, the worst thing you can do is then compete directly with the retailers or hardware manufacturers. They will perceive this as a threat (correctly) and then refuse to use your service/software.

At least TechCrunch hinted about Google building its own cell phone:

I think Google will only use it as Plan B when Android doesn't gain the momentum it needs.

People want to see the GPhone doesn't mean it will happen or even make sense. Google won't make money selling GPhone. Google's business model so far is mostly ad based. And Android fits that model very well. Creating a hardware GPhone will just get in the way of Android.

I still think Google isn't interested in developing its own hardware. It's strategy is to get as many people to use its stuff as possible, and the free Android is designed exactly for that purpose.
