A virulent strain of wheat-killing fungus, Ug99, that sprung up in Africa in 1999 has now spread into Iran and threatens to spread into other wheat producing regions of Asia and eventually the entire world. Ug99 is a race of stem rust that blocks the vascular tissues in cereal grains including wheat, oats and barley. Unlike leaf or stripe rusts that may reduce crop yields, Ug99-infected plants may suffer up to 100 percent loss.
Will we be thrown into global starvation due to the horrible wheat-killing fungus?

Global starvation? Not where there isn't starvation already occurring. And if it happens, it will quickly right itself in about a year.
Yes, it is quite possible the next generation will have to start eating the Ug99 fungus instead.
On the second thought, can we start eating the fungus instead? Japanese, Chinese and French have some good fungus dishes.
