According to the Nikkei Business Daily, Japan's Suzuki Motor Company will begin selling cars that run completely on 100% ethanol in the US and Brazil by 2010. The company will begin the transition by first offering an E25 sedan for sale in Brazil this coming March.

Will GM be able to follow in the field of energy-efficient cars?

We human race will continue to rely on fossil fuel until we almost run out. That's human nature. We don't solve problems until it is actually there.

btw, ethanol powered cars aren't automatically energy-efficient. They just use alternative fuel. They can still be very inefficient.

From what I know, GM is already working on cars that run on ethanol, hydrogen, as well as electricity. However, producing a concept vehicle is one thing, pushing it out to the retail market is quite another.

More importantly, I think there are major pressures from oil companies to prevent the release of these vehicles which would basically render a big trunk of their companies business as irrelevant.

So, the technology would be there. Mass production? Unlikely.
