What is ZiiTrend?
Escalated military action between the US and Pakistan?
black-shoulder ( Score Rank: #6 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) black-shoulder  |  will close on 20-Dec-2008 (16 days from now)
Tension is building up in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border as US troops are trying to increase their offensive pressure on Taliban militants who are roaming in the area.

Pakistani troops fired shots at a US helicopter, which was hovering at the borders of the two countries (US claims it has not entered Pakistani air space, while Pakistan insists that it has). In return, US troops fired back warning shots at the Pakistani troops.

With the change of regime in Pakistan, US-Pakistani relationship is not what it used to be. Tension is building, and military actions are not uncommon. With this in mind, do you think ground troops of either country would engage in escalated military action? And if so, to what extent?

It's important to point out that the new regime in Pakistan is not nearly as friendly to the US as former president Musaraf (sp?) is. This said, I agree with Poisontongue that US requires the strategic importance of Pakistan in its struggle against the Taliban. So probably they will try to use diplomatic ways to force Pakistan to allow US troops to raid the Taliban living near the Afghan-Pakistani border.

The Bush administration would be committing a seriously foolish mistake by intruding upon an "ally". Can you imagine the fuel this would bring to terrorists and anti-US sentiments? It should even bring international backlash. What right do we have criticizing Russia if we can't even respect the territorial integrity of our friends? The administration needs all the help they can get over there to further its interests, and a further souring of relations is a pointless way to raise international tensions and weaken future interests.

What a convenient problem to leave to a successor, though...
