Are they 14? Are they 16?
Questions about the Chinese women have been swirling for months, with media reports and online records suggesting that He, Yang and Jiang might be as young as 14. Gymnasts must turn 16 during the Olympic year to be eligible. The New York Times and the Associated Press in particular uncovered ample evidence last month and earlier this month to question China's insistence that she was 16. Then a computer expert, Mike Walker of New York-based Intrepidus Group, added more muscle to those questions, using a Chinese search engine to unearth official government documents that showed He to be just 14. Any move to disqualify the Chinese gymnasts on the basis that they are too young, would shock and disappoint the Chinese, who have gone out of their way to put on a perfect sports showcase for the world. Will any Chinese Gymnasts be found just age 14? Will any of the Chinese gymnasts be disqualified?
