Discovered Life-Substance on Mars by Aug 2008?
oWell ( Score Rank: #21 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) oWell  |  was scored on 04-Aug-2008 (70 days ago)
The Phoenix Mars Lander successfully parachuted and touched down on the surface of Mars Sunday, despite some fears about the spacecraft's ability to penetrate the atmosphere and remain upright after landing. The Phoenix is the first craft to explore the poles of Mars. The lander has analytical tools that can study water thought to be just below the surface of the frozen soil. Solar arrays power the craft. A meteorological station and thermal and evolved-gas analyzer are expected to collect and study information about conditions.

The lander will study whether the site could have supported primitive life. Among the things it will look for is whether the ice melted in Mars' history and whether the soil samples contain traces of organic compounds, one of the building blocks of life.

Will it find life-substance on Mars by Aug?

They will find something, just not enough to prove life on Mars, that's all.

Maybe, but it will be long after August until that becomes public. Scientists are a very careful lot, and they will make sure they don't have to retract the story later.

The term "life substance" can be interpreted in a variety of ways... if we are talking about actual "life" materials like DNA and RNA, then I think the chance is very remote to find anything in such a short time frame. If we are talking about pure organic chemicals (various amino acids, or even simpler organic compounds), then the chance would be slightly higher.

I still think the time frame for this prediction makes the chance very, very low.

I still believe Mars contains sign of life. But I don't believe the new Phoenix lander is able to find it. The evidence of life is probably hidden deep inside the earth. And the robot can only analyze rocks on the surface of Mars.

Anyone knows how long the lander can be active on Mars?

The primary mission is anticipated to last 90 sols (Martian days) – just over 92 Earth days. Researchers are hoping that the lander will survive into the Martian winter so that it can witness polar ice developing at the spacecraft's exploration area. As much as three feet of solid carbon dioxide ice could appear in the area. Even if it does survive partway into the winter, it is very unlikely that the lander will function throughout the entire winter due to the intense cold.
