Cuba: no more Castro by 2009?
oWell ( Score Rank: #14 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) oWell  |  will close on 01-Jan-2009 (125 days from now)
President Raul Castro is shoring up Cuba's one-party rule after a smooth leadership change from his brother Fidel, announcing a Communist Party congress that should cement the move to a more institutionalized power structure. Fidel Castro officially still heads the party as first secretary, and the congress is likely to select a new chief, ending his last formal claim to power. The younger Castro announced that the party will hold its first congress in a dozen years on a yet-unspecified date in the second half of 2009.

Since Cuba became a one-party republic and the Communist party became the official political party, Cuba has been both condemned and praised by certain Cuban groups, international groups, and foreign governments regarding democracy. Although the media is controlled by the state, the Cuban government contends that the Cuban political system is democratic.

Will the Castro's family be still in power? Will the local opposition parties overthrown the Communist?

Analysts are divided on what kind of leader Raul Castro might make. They suspect that as long as Fidel is alive he will have a strong influence on government. It has been suggested that Raul would make a more radical leader than his brother. Fidel said in 1997: "Behind me are others more radical than I." But others suggest he would help the country make the transition to a "softer", more market-friendly form of communism.

He has raised expectations of economic reforms in Cuba, saying that it required "structural changes", and acknowledging that many people could not get by on government-decreed wages.

No matter what, the recent Cuba has widely open to foreign goods - it helps Castro to gain popularity among the merchants and the young generations.

The Castro will remain in control for quite some time still... one thing that the Western world may not really know (or may not want to admit) is that the Cubans are actually pretty proud of their stance against being westernized. Cuba has also been very good in sharing its wealth with its citizens. Yes, the country is very poor, but everyone is sharing that burden. It is unlike the situation in China where the rich becomes richer, and the poor becomes poorer. Cuba is one of the states where the communists' ideology is actually somewhat being practised.
