What is ZiiTrend?
Cellphones Powered by Solor Energy by 2010?
globalwarmer ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) globalwarmer  |  will close on 01-Jan-2010 (41 days from now)
It's frustrating that we need to charge our cell phones every 2-3 days. Attaching the phone with a charger for a few hours doesn't make the phone "truly" mobile.

Will any mobile phones be powered by solar energy by 2010? Please answer yes if you think any major vendors (eg. Nokia) will build such a phone.

Very unlikely. They will, however, invest in longer lasting batteries and smart energy management processors (as Apple did in the latest Macbook Pro series).

I predict there will be a solar alround device soon. But nothing like that integrated in a cell phone.

Very unlikely. Cell phones could not run off solar in most locations due to envioronment. Most people use Cel phones at least half the time indoors as well. Even if we could imagine a cell phone useing a small enough amount of energy to be powered by even the newer photovoltaic cells comeing out soon, the useablity of such a phone is too low for a company to successfully market it.

You can buy solar chargers now, I don't see why this technology can't be applied soon.

Sorry, manual wind-up chargers are available now, I don't see why solar chargers should be far behind.

We're not talking about a calculator, here, we're talking about a cell phone. The phone has to transmit and receive signals powerful enough to make it to the nearest relay. And forget about it if you want your mobile phone to include any additional features like GPS, music, internet, etc. Drains too much power. Of course, the problem is really in the question. I could cover the roof of my garage with solar panels and set it up so that they only charge my mobile phone, so long as I never left the house with my mobile phone. That would elicit a "yes" response, but defeat the purpose of the mobility of the phone (which is the only reason I can't answer "no" with 100% confidence). A solar panel the size of most mobile phones generating sufficient power for the mobile phone, though? No way!

I have seen promising technology for charging your phone with simple body movements. Wouldn't it be great if you could charge your phone holding it in your hand and rotating your arm in circles? That's probably a bit more likely. Don't know if it will be mainstream by 2010, though. That's really not that far away.

It makes more sense to put solar panels on cars or lawn mowers. Mobile phones? I don't think so.

It's not convenient to charge a cell phone with solar power. I think the developmental trend should be to develop more ways to capture solar energy and use it as our source of electricity. But a device that operates partly/solely on solar electricity? Unlikely.

During the late 80's and early 90's, lots of gadgets were solar powered. Like calculators, watches, even desk lights. I wonder if solar power will become a new fashion trend.
