Capture Osama Bin Laden in 2008?
aelim ( Score Rank: #93 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) aelim  |  closed on 01-Jan-2009 (324 days ago)
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has stated that evidence linking Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden to the attacks of September 11 is clear and irrefutable. Seven years after 9/11 attack, we still occasionally receive his tapes. After wars in Afghanistan and Iran, do we still care Osama Bin Laden? will our government be able to capture him (no matter alive or dead) in 2008?

There have been no reports of bin Ladens capture as of yet. Unless the gov't is keeping it very quiet, which considering the fuss about Saddam H. is highly unlikley, then Osama is still at large.

His capture has not been televised as of yet. As his capture would have been a top news story and it is now febuary, it is safe to assume he is still at large.

Considering he's long dead and the primary icon of the "terrorist threat", chances are lesser than none.

If we want to play the good guy, then there is always a bad buy. So if the bad guy is captured, it's game over. Why the heck do we want that?

With all the conspiracy theory around, I am starting the doubt if the guy actually existed at all.

He's the one thing that gave Americans a reason to unite and plunge headlong into Afghanistan. It's the one premise for staying there, the one wild card that can be used on the average indifferent American - terrorism. Even oil might not garner enough support for invasion. They need the fury of 9/11 constantly being brought up by certain Republicans (ahem, Giuliani). Without bin Laden, without terrorism, there's no tablecloth to drape over government interests. If they know the truth, we'll likely never know and I doubt the government has much concern.

One comment I want to add is: even if bin Laden is dead, the US has no advantage in announcing it, nor does al Qaeda. US still wants a figure head to have everyone hate on; meanwhile, in the forces against the western world, the fundamentalists also need a figure head... unless they have a way to turn bin Laden into a martyr.

It reminds me of the documentary "Where in the world is Osama Bin Laden?" by Morgan Spurlock
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963208/

To be honest, I think the guy is dead. But we will never know the truth, right? If he dies, the American war effort dies with him.

I think bin Laden will die from health problems before he is captured by anybody. Unlike Saddam Hussein, bin Laden is accustomed to hiding, and has been doing so for a long time. The US does not have the resources, nor I think the intelligence network, to find him, at least not quickly.
