Trans fat may make food taste better and last longer, but eating them significantly causes health issue. Found in many oils and margarines, trans fats extend the shelf life of products but have been linked to clogged arteries, diabetes, and other serious health conditions.
So why aren't they banned in Canada? Demark banned trans fats in 2003. Switzerland followed suit recently. New York City banned trans fats. California last week became the first state to ban trans fats in food sold in restaurants. In June 2007, the federal government asked the food industry to voluntarily reduce trans fat levels in food products to five per cent of the total fat content. The voluntary limit was set at two per cent for vegetable oils and margarine. Despite this initiative, the baked goods sector remains a challenge, with only a few pastry manufacturers making strides to reduce trans fat in their products. Will trans fat be completely banned by law by 2009?
