Canada: Ban Pellet Gun
Canada ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) Canada  |  closed on 01-Jan-2009 (324 days ago)
A 13-year-old Surrey boy who sustained serious injuries after being shot with a pellet gun died on Oct 14. The teen, who had been clinging to life in hospital, died as a result of being struck in the head with pellet gun, police said in a press release.

Anyone over the age of 16 can purchase a pellet gun. They are available for sale in downtown Vancouver for about $100. You don't need a firearms license to buy one. However, death or serious injury by pellet gun in Metro Vancouver is rare, police say.

Will there be any policy change for the use of pellet gun in 2008?

If they've kept the law from requiring licenses this long, then the status quo will continue in 2008. Never mind that historically, air-powered rifles were considered _the_ sniper's choice during the 100-year war in Europe. If civilisation ever collapses in Australia, spring-powered air-rifles will probably be the weapon of choice here. (No easy-to-access sulphur deposits in this, the least geologically active continent in the world. Thus, hard to make gunpowder.)

Sadly, the 13-year-old boy has died... that said, I don't think the death will push the issue that much further that it'd be done by the parliament by the end of this year. The top priority for the parliament between now and the end of the calender year probably would be issues surrounding the economy.

Banning pellet guns go in line with the Conservatives' platform of going against crimes and tougher sentences and what not. That said, with fewer than 2 months left in the session, I don't think this would be a top "to do" item.
