Canada: More Provinces Adopt Carbon Tax by Sep 2008?
Canada ( Score Rank: #28 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Canada  |  was scored on 04-Sep-2008 (3 days ago)
On 19 February 2008, the Canadian province of British Columbia announced its intention to implement a $10/tonne carbon tax beginning 1 July 2008, making BC the first North American jurisdiction to implement such a tax. The tax will rise by $5 a year until it reaches $30 in 2012. Unlike previous proposals, legislation will keep the pending carbon tax revenue neutral by reducing corporate and income taxes at an equivalent rate.

In the era of high oil price, will our politicians continue to adopt carbon tax?

Up to Sep 4, 2008, only BC adopts the carbon tax. As the election is upcoming, Canada's opposition Liberal Party responded to criticism of its carbon tax plan on Wednesday, ahead of a looming election call, promising a total of C$900 million ($849 million) in tax breaks and subsidies to farmers, loggers, fishermen and truckers. If his idea is supported, the whole nation will adopt the new tax plan.

I don't understand why BC was motivated to move first in this issue. It is highly unfriendly to voters in the era of high energy cost. IMO, other provinces will observe for awhile how the carbon tax affects the emotions.

This is a bit silly. Why would BC pushes out such a tax while the skyrocket oil price already produces the same effect in changing people's behavior in gas usage.

Really bad timing. I feel sorry for Canadians.
