An analysis of the Air Pollution Index (API) trends in the Olympic Cities is important primarily because of China's commitment to the International Olympic Committee that the API in the Olympic Cities shall be within Level II or API Scope 100.
The API runs from zero to 500 and is divided into categories by the Chinese government, with zero to 50 considered "excellent" and anything above 300 interpreted as "heavily polluted." Readings under 100 are generally considered safe. Over the last decade, Beijing has been measured to regularly reach 200, and sometimes even 500 some days each month. (references: http://www.cleanairnet.or...) Starting last Sunday, the air-cleaning regimen went into effect. Some trucks were banned from the road, traffic curbs were instituted, regional factories were shut down and in-city construction work stopped. Will the API remain safe (i.e below 100) during Aug 8 (opening) - Aug 24 (closing)
