Babies outside China Affected by Toxic Milk
oWell ( Score Rank: User did not make predictions in the last 30 days ) oWell  |  was scored on 20-Oct-2008 (396 days ago)
On Sep 15, a total of 1,253 Chinese children have fallen ill after drinking contaminated milk powder, and two babies have died, China's health ministry says. The company at the centre of the growing scandal, Sanlu Group, is part-owned by New Zealand's Fonterra Cooperative, the country's biggest dairy producer. The New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said her government contacted Beijing directly, after alerting the company and officials but to no avail.

Babies in China have been taken ill after using milk contaminated with the industrial chemical, melamine. Melamine is used to make plastics and is banned from food. Ingesting it can lead to the development of kidney stones.

Will any babies outside China affected by the toxic milk as well?

Some suggested that HK is NOT China, and the milk was exported to many places outside China as well. As a result, I changed the answer to YES.

I don't know if oWell considers Macau and Hong Kong to be a part of China or not, but there have been reports that small children in both territories have developed kidney stones as a result of the toxic milk. The latest involves a 3.5 year-old girl in Hong Kong.

The milk powder is sold in Hong Kong, and I'm sure in some other places as a cheap form of milk. While other countries probably will make a quick recall of the product (unlike China, which waits more than a month do recall the product), the damage perhaps is done.
