Apple will start selling unlocked phones in 2008

I just read this article and it made a very interesting prediction, "Apple will start selling unlocked phones"
http://bits.blogs.nytimes...

The reasoning behind it is quite interesting. Quoted from the article:

"Apple has found that an enormous number of its customers are unlocking the phones, using third-party software, to use on carriers of their choice. If Apple were to remain in keeping with its culture, it would simply try to make the next-generation iPhone even harder to unlock. But then again, it could decide to avoid this fight, change its business model and just sell phones...'

Let's predict if Apple will start selling unlocked phones in 2008.

No. Apple seems dedicated to locking customers in to their carrier - I imagine that there is a medium-term contract behind that as well. Additionally, from previous events with people's unlocked phones getting bricked by Apple updates, this suggests a semi-malicious strategy to "encourage" customers to stick with the Apple carrier.

One of the reason why iPhone sells so well is because of its low price. I bet Apple won't raise the price and start selling unlocked iPhone.

Apple selling unlocked iPhone means the phone is going to sell for more. That can be good or bad news. The good news is that iPhone can be used with any carriers without breaking the users' agreement. The bad news is... pretty obvious.
