Any Countries Boycott Beijing Olympics 2008 due to Tibetans' Movement?
rubian ( Score Rank: #453 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) rubian  |  was scored on 08-Aug-2008 (103 days ago)
China wants to use the Beijing Olympics this summer to showcase itself as a modern world power. However, the games are drawing attention to the country's human rights record. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao accused the Dalai Lama and his supporters of orchestrating violent clashes to taint the Beijing Olympics, saying Tuesday that they were provoking violence to promote Tibetan independence.

Rumors are flying around: Taiwan and France may boycott Beijing Olympics opening; some are opposing the idea of boycott. Do you think any countries will not join Olympics at the end?

I do not think that taiwan will boycott the olympics even if the us is close with taiwan it would be suicide to try it due to economic conditions
france maybe though, it would still be risky

No country will boycott, China is becoming too economically powerful, especially with America's economy taking a nose-dive. However, several countries (3 or more) will "express displeasure" by skipping opening ceremonies, etc.

The trouble between the Tibet and China is still hot in the mind of everybody, and the idea of boycott is still legitimate.

However there will a talk between the Chinese Authorities and the Lama leaders and a resolution will be quickly found. From then, every wound will be healed and every ill-thought will be forgotten the whole world will not boycott the Beijing Ceremony on the opening day.

Hey, check the video I just added: it reveals how western media make fake reporting about riot in Tibet by modifying and misjudging pictures purposely. I would like to support Tibet, but I want to know the truth as well.

Thanks for sharing, Rubian... actually, a German station has apologized today for using a picture of a protest in Nepal and said that it was Tibet...

I don't believe in the reports by most of the mass media, either from the "western" side like CNN, nor the propaganda machine in China... However, there is one difference in the "news" that these media sources are creating:

When the German nation is caught making the news, it at least would apologize and admit that they have made a mistake (whether it's an honest mistake, or was it done purposely, who knows). I don't think the Chinese media would ever apologize for even making an honest mistake.

If I remember correctly, there are always a few countries boycotting Olympics every time. So, it is safe to assume there will be a few countries doing the same this year. And the Olympics committee are talking about penalizing these countries already. I agree with them.

The biggest problem I see in the US/CAN media is that they dont show much of the violence caused by ppl in Tibet.
They need to show both side of the story. When you have protestors storming government buildings and attacking "han/typical non tibet" Chinese ppl in the streets, SOME force is needed to restore order.
I dont endorse China's action, but I am equally, if not, more against ppl who try to get Independence by form of Terrorism (bomb in airplane incident earlier in March)or Violence to other citizen who dont share their view.

Media organizations almost always have an agenda to push... for those who can read Chinese, it is actually very ironic, almost laughable, to see how different media organizations are reporting the events. Those who are pro-Chinese government are almost exclusively reporting the Han residence and people being injured or damaged by the protesters, and those who are anti-Chinese government are almost exclusively reporting the injured and the killed monks, often including some very gruesome looking pictures.

I think if we combine the news from both sources, we'd get a clearer picture as to what is actually happening in Tibet right now.

Human rights issue is very real in China, but also very real in the rest of the world including the countries US invaded in the past.

The sad thing is, this has nothing to do with Olympics.

hey it's not about Olympics, it's about politics and money. it requires many countries work together (esp. US) to slap China. i don't see anyone would do silly things now.

It may be hard to predict number of countries which will boycott the Olympics. Let's predict which countries will officially announce the boycott. I would say Taiwan might do so.

I think some very small countries, such as those in Central America who still do not have an official nation to nation relationship with China, and who may only be sending a very small number of athletes to the games, may be the most likely ones to boycott the Olympics.

Of course, the actual decision will be a lot more clear as the Tibet affair unfolds - if things begin calming down very quickly, and there are no more bloody suppressions, then the games may just go as is, with no countries, but only individual athletes, pulling out.

The torch relay for the 2008 Olympics will go to Tibet as scheduled despite the unrest in the Himalayan region, a senior Beijing organiser said on Wednesday. What a good show for the international media.

That's a tough one to predict, Rubian. I think there WILL be countries that boycott the Olympics, but the exact number is very tough to determine.

I am almost certain though that the traditional world powers like the US and Russia will NOT boycott the Olympics though - there is too much politics and money associated with China now - most countries don't really want to mess with the communist government.

Some athletes, however, have spoken up and say they will boycott the Olympics, and the human rights issue is only one of the reason. Some actually complain of the terrible pollution that makes their health a hazard for going there.
