Abolish Software Patents in 2008?

A growing number of software patents cover abstract principles that are essential to software development. Consider, for instance, patent 5,175,857, which covers simple and stupid concepts. A group of patent organizations are banding together in an effort to eliminate software patents that they claim are threatening innovation and resulting in costly and unnecessary legal battles.

The non-profit End Software Patents(ESP) project has received backing from the Free Software Foundation, the Public Patent Foundation, and the Software Freedom Law Center. The group will initially focus on two goals: helping corporations challenge software patents they believe have no legal validity; and pushing for laws that protect software innovation from patent law.

    Sorry, but patents are witten right into our constitution and whild I think alot of thes patents are stupid, I am pretty sure patents will continue on for a long time.

    Software patents will become less relevant as litigation closes off pathways to use them, but they won't be fully abolished for at least 40 years.

    So many large companies owning so many patents. They just don't just go obsolete all of a sudden. This kind of thing will take years.

    Btw, the prediction is inspired by http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/....

    It reminds me the stupid patent of Amazon's 1-click shopping. The patents are somewhat useless, but very difficult to ask the big companies (ya you know Microsoft) to give up expensive patents. The useless patents can still be used to play legal games with other companies, esp. poor start-ups.

      btw, I was browsing the Chapters Indigo site several days ago, and I notice they have the 1-click shopping thing too. This is so stupid to patent the 1 click shopping process.
