On the oft-criticized pollution, Beijing municipal government said it had invested more than 140 billion yuan (20.5 billion U.S. dollars) since 1998 into more than 200 projects for improving the city's air quality.

The average daily air pollution index (API) so far this month was 56, far below 81 reported last year. Major air pollutants on average dropped 40 percent over the same period last year, with nitrogen oxide emissions directly related to vehicles down by 61 percent, according to the bureau.

On a day when the heat on the field topped a punishing 107 degrees, and the referee twice stopped play because of the sizzle, Argentina proved itself a champion again. Argentina beats Nigeria 1-0 for Olympic gold.

While the world's best athletes were showcasing their talents in first-rate facilities, Chinese security forces kept terrorism at bay. There was no attack on any Olympic venues. Good job !

It is the first time that China suppressed all countries in the gold medal count. By that point China's lead in the gold medal count was unassailable, and its barely hidden agenda of topping the United States for the first time handily achieved. The final tally: China 51; U.S. 36.

In the overall medal count, though, the order was reversed: U.S. 110; China 100. Both nations could claim to be No. 1 in a contest in which there was more at stake than just bragging rights over which country's athletic prowess is faster, stronger, higher.

An interesting article talks about "Gold Medal Economics" - few economists would have been surprised that China is gaining ground on the gold medal tally. While it is difficult to predict the outcome of individual events, the overall number of medals a country will win can be closely forecast: http://www.forbes.com/opinions/2008/0...
